The Start

Todays the day we finally left. Ten to twelve years of talking and planning comes down to this. We awoke this morning at 5:45 to say goodbye to Pearl and Dennis as they went fishing. Hope you caught fish today. Pearl and Dennis have been great. They taught me the basics of fishing for Salmon and Trout on Lake Michigan. They could have taught me more but Karen and I had to leave for the start of our adventure. We got a great send off from Bob, Pam & Russ, Cathy & Gary and Molly too. We will miss you guys more than you know.

Early Morning Send Off

I watched a flock of geese go by and thought it’s getting to be that time of year. Each morning we wake up to the sounds of ducks and geese. We’ve noted them flocking up at night and you can hear the wings whistle by as the last bits of light disappear from the night sky.

The tears had barely dried from Karen’s eyes when she received a phone call and started crying again, but this time it was different. Karen just received news that her favorite college professor, a woman she worshipped as a mentor and loved as a person had passed away in a terrible car accident. Deborah Hopkins was Karen’s accounting professor at NIU. I’ve never heard Karen praise anyone like she did Deborah. I know Deborah must have been a terrific teacher and person from the way Karen felt about her. We grieve for her families loss and the loss of such a wonderful person.

The remainder of todays trip was uneventful,
we motored the whole way with the wind not blowing as was predicted. We arrived in Chicago and tied up for the night with a beautiful view of the city and lake.
